Faustino "Robert" Martinez entered this life on April 3, 1967, the last baby born in the Calixto Garcia Hospital, in Havana, Cuba. His family came to the United States when he was a small child. Living in Miami, Florida for a short time, the family then moved to Bell Gardens, California, where Robert was raised. He attended school, but, after the 8th garde, he chose to leave public school and continue his education in the "school of hard knocks". He pursued his true love, that of being a choreographer and dancer. He began working at a young age, for the Plaza Salon in West Hollywood, CA. Fautico, as he was called by his family, loved all kinds of music, but had a particular soft spot for the Techno style. He felt he could really express himself through dance to this kind of music. so, that is the music you are hearing now. The song you are listening to, by Gloria Estefan, had special meaning to Robert and Glenn.
Robert loved entertaining, and he had numerous friends and collegues who supported him in his art. His talents were enjoyed by all who witnessed his performances.
Certain things drew him away from the dance floor, though, and he entered the realm of substance abuse. Drugs became a dominating factor in his life, and, although he tried many times to get control of his life, the addiction was too powerful. Robert constantly told people to be strong, to "just say no" and not fall into the temptation he fell for. He offered suggestions on how and where to seek help to others he encountered that were having the same problem.
He will always be remembered for his giving manner. He would offer anything he had to someone in need, whether it be a friend or a complete stranger. He was the first one to offer aid to a motorist stranded with car trouble or a flat tire. He helped the elderly cross streets in safety, carried their groceries for them, and gave of himself to all whose paths crossed his.
Faustino "Robert" Martinez entered eternal life on January 11, 1995, in Paramount, CA. He was laid to rest in Park Lawn Memorial Park, in the City of Commerce, CA. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved mother, Caridad; his brother, Johnny; his companion, Glenn; many other family members and friends; and all who had the opportunity to watch him dance.
A life cut way too short, but a legacy of care and service that cannot be destroyed. Farewell, dear Robert, until we meet again.
There are days when it feels like it was just yesterday when me and you were hanging out and you would walk me home and there are other days when it feels like an eternity when we have last spoken. I wish you were still with us but I know you are in a better place, Im just glad I'm able to say this after 14 years. I love you Fautico.
Love Always your Cousin Edwardo Rodriguez
